Toxic Workplace: How Black Women Are Operationalizing DEIA Norms, Policy And Programs

According to the Surgeon General, there are five essentials for Workplace Mental Health & Well-Being. The first of 5 is Protection from Harm. In this video series, we will be discussing its four components

  • Prioritize workplace physical and psychological safety

  • Enable adequate rest •

  • Normalize and support mental health

  • Operationalize DEIA* norms, policies, and programs

There is a thing called At-Will employment. The essence of At-Will employment is if you do not like where you are working, quit. Anybody can leave a job they do not like at any time and for any reason. Employers can let go of any employee for any reason no matter how long they have worked there. However, At-Will employment does not mean that your employer can terminate or harass based on race, the color of your skin, gender, or disability; and if you don’t like it you can leave. No, it’s the opposite. You push forward.  quitting your job and leaving your employment rights on the table is not a BOSS move. It is an enslaved move. I am not telling you to stay in a place that is hurting you. Again, the opposite. I am saying your job is not a personal relationship, it’s a business relationship. Think of the laws as your boundaries, are you teaching others how to treat you?

So many of my colleagues are trying to help you with job stress and health equity. What will it take for you to participate in the process? What if they never give you easy access to your employment rights? Are you willing to abandon your promised life on the other side of the opposition? If you quit will you be walking away from your employment rights?  if the answer is yes, I caution you to reconsider.

If you are a Black career woman experiencing job stress it is your responsibility to say something. Anti-discrimination and anti-bias laws and DEIA policies are your rules for engagement. Black career women who eliminate job stress remain inside the Standard Population as industry leaders. If they deviate, they become just another public health statistic.
